The illusion works by only letting you see one in 4 lines at any one time. That means that each fourth line is part of the same drawing as the next fourth line! When the plastic with black lines is moved across your drawing, an animated optical illusion occurs.
YouTube illusionist Brusspup has used everything from mirrors to fire to create his optical illusions, but his latest trick is a little more 2D. Using a printer, a transparency sheet and a piece of regular paper, he made several illusions that trick your brain into thinking they're actually animated when the transparency is slid across the paper.

This is awesome! How do you do the transparent grid that you run across the pictures? Can’t imagine you can just run a piece of transparent plastic sheeting through the printer.

animbar lets you easily create your own animation on paper and transparancy. From a set of input images two output images are computed, that are printed one on paper and one on transparency. By moving the transparency over the paper you create a fascinating animation effect. This kind of animation technique is hundreds of years old and known under several names: picket fence animation, barrier grid animation, Moiré animation, to name a few. Recently, it found some attention through books such as Magic Moving Images: Animated optical illusions by Colin Ord or the Gallop!: A Scanimation Picture Book, Swing!: A Scanimation Picture Book, Waddle!: A Scanimation Picture Book series by Rufus Butler Seder. At the moment, animbar is released as binary for Windows operating systems andin source distribution for all other platforms such as Linux or Mac OS.The source code is licensed under the terms of the GPL v3 and is based on Qt.

The following video tutorial guides you through generating your firstpicket fence animation with animbar. Right below the video you findmore detailed user documentation.The input to animbar is a set of images of same pixel size. This means, that all the images we are going to load must have the same number of pixels both in width and height.The images may be of any format your local QT installation supports.After starting animbar, go to the menu
to load the input images. The file dialog is setup in such a way tofilter all the supported file types. The therein found list of validfile endings (jpeg, png, bmp, ..) is the place to learn what format your input images can be. You may also have a look at this tableto learn, what image formats Qt supports by default.
After having opened all input images (you may select multiple imagesin the file open dialog at a time), all loaded images are displayed asthumbnails along with their short filenames in the left part of the userinterface. You may now rearrange the order of images by moving themaround (drag and drop). You may also remove selected images bypressing the delete key or add further images through the file opendialog.
Once we are done with setting up the input images, compute theanimation for either the selected or all input images by choosing the menu entry
Depending on the input size of your images and the power of your computer, this may take some seconds. The resulting base image, thatis the image combining all the input images into one, is displayed rightafter computation has finished. To get an idea on what the final animation will look like, move the slider right below the image displayarea: This will overlay the mask with the base image; actually whatwe will do in real world after printing the images.

You may now print the computed images with your favourite application.
In version 1.2 we introduced the possibility to export the generated picketfence animation to an animated SVG file
The SVG file will include the base images and the bar mask and will display the computed animation in any SVG viewer that supports animation. Modern browsers such as Firefox or Chrome are able to display animated SVGs.
A word on printing. We will obtain best results when we print the images without any scaling, anti-aliasing, dithering etc involved. Downscaling the images, thus reducing the number of pixels being printed, will decline the quality of the animation. Upscaling should be fine though. We will learn more about this as animbar gets used.
