Vag Com Release 409.1

As some have noted here and on vortex, Vag-Com 409.1 does not work on windows 7 64-bit (but seems to work on Windows 7 32-bit if you install under C: instead of C:Program Files).

Here are instructions on how to use release 409.1 on Win7 64bit using xp mode. It is actually very easy but there are a bunch of small details so I am trying to be very explicit here.
Requirements:
(1) Vag-Com 409.1
(2) Windows 7 64-bit (NOTE: Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate ONLY. Home Premium does not work)
(3) A newer computer that supports xp-mode. (Check http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/support/configure-bios.aspx)
Also, I assume the use of an FTDI based USB interface cable (like alpha-bid). If you don't use that, ignore the specifics on the driver install and get your own.
Step 1: Download the FTDI drivers in Windows 7. Get the latest .zip file for windows here: http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm, open it and drag the folder that is inside to your desktop. So, for example, I now have a folder on my desktop: 'CDM 2.06.00 WHQL Certified'
Step 2: Install the drivers, there is a guide here: http://www.ftdichip.com/Documents/InstallGuides.htm. Because you have the drivers in that folder on your desktop, it should be easy to find if you have to specify the location of the driver during the install process.
Step 3: Install xp-mode. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx. The download may take a while, about 10 minutes on a normal Cable Internet connection, its 500MB+
Step 4: You will have to reboot after you install, then you can open xp-mode. This will give you what looks like a Windows XP desktop in a window, with the green start button and everything. From now on do everything 'Inside' this window, so you have to use the internet explorer that is on the XP desktop to download vag-com, etc.
Step 5: Download Vag-Com and re-download the FTDI drivers inside your WinXP window, using the internet explorer icon that is on the XP desktop. Again, open the ZIP file with the drivers and drag the folder to the desktop.
Step 6: If you don't still have the USB cable plugged in, plug it back in. Now, at the top of the xp-mode window, there is a button labeled 'USB' with a dropdown arrow. Open this menu and there should be a listing that says something like 'USB Serial Port (COM 3)'. When you click this, it is like plugging the usb cable into the XP desktop, and you should follow the directions ( http://www.ftdichip.com/Documents/InstallGuides.htm ) To install the drivers inside XP-mode.
Step 7: Install Vag-Com 409.1 (http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/download/archives.html). Easy. Your usb cable should show up as COM 3, and you should be able to use Vag-Com as normal.
